Oceansize : Interview
Author: Aaron Brown
Published: 21/10/2007

(edited out, click the link below to read the whole stuff)

PB : How did you get Robin Finck (former Nine Inch Nails and current Guns N’ Roses guitarist-Ed) onboard to do the artwork for 'Frames' ?

Gambler : He’s a hero of mine. We saw his art; it is pretty ambiguous and amazing stuff so just asked him if could we use some of his stuff.

PB : Did you meet him?

Gambler : No, we e-mailed him and he was cool with it. I mean if you look at his work. You cannot quite tell what it is. I think our music is a lot like that.

PB : You didn’t by chance ask him when 'Chinese Democracy' was being released ?

Gambler : We thought about it. But judging by the FAQ section of his website entitled ‘When will Chinese Democracy be released’ we didn’t think it was appropriate.

PB : Thank you.

On a sidenote, have you bought a copy of this album?

Nothing clever to say.

I've only seen this:

There's a plain cover with just "Oceansize" written, and then there's that one.

They were interviewed by some german magazine as well. I found and translated it some time ago but never got around to posting it anywhere. It's pretty much the same q&a but the first answer is a bit more elaborate:

---

The ink painting on the booklet of the album was created by Robin Finck. He is known as former guitarist of Nine Inch Nails, now he seems to be part of the current lineup of Guns 'n Roses. How did that come about?

Mike Gambler and I admired Robin when he was with Nine Inch Nails. He was also the main reason Gambler took up the guitar. Gambler was a keyboarder before but then he fell in love with Robin's guitar playing. Many years later I searched the net for Robin and found his website where there were all these brilliant drawings. That's how it was. We like things that are vague, that have an ambiguous character and allow own interpretations. You can look at Robin's drawings from many different persepectives and still don't know what exactly they are supposed to mean. I thought that that fit well with us. So I contacted Robin and asked him: look, we're broke, can we use you pictures? And he actually agreed. We are very happy about it. I get pretty emotional when I think about this guy being involved with our album. He even wanted a few copies for himself and his friends because he liked it so much. It's incredible, so cool!

Since you're practically at the source, can you give me any information about the forgotten mystery called "Chinese Democracy"? Except, of course, that the album is ging to come out "soon"...

No, and I don't think Robin could either! (laughs)

The interview was published in 2008.
